You've spent good money on quality fixtures (maybe even some bega wall lights or a nice outdoor downlight setup), and now you're dealing with a strobe effect that makes the space look amateurish.

The immediate assumption is usually: 'The fixture is defective.' And sometimes, it is. But more often than not, the source of the problem is something else entirely. In my experience (I'm a quality compliance manager at a lighting company, reviewing roughly 200+ product batches annually), I'd say about 60% of flickering issues I see trace back to one of three root causes that have nothing to do with the lamp itself.

How to test this: If you have a multimeter, check voltage between the hot and neutral at the fixture when it flickers. If the voltage fluctuates wildly (more than 5-10 volts), you probably have a loose neutral or a load-balancing issue on that circuit.

Scenario B: The Dimmer Compatibility Problem (The Common Culprit)

This one is so frequent it's almost boring. And yet, it still catches people out. Someone installs a bega wall light or a ceiling-mounted outdoor downlight on a dimmer switch that was designed for old-style incandescent or halogen bulbs.

The assumption: 'A dimmer is a dimmer.'

The reality: Most standard 'forward phase' dimmers (the cheap ones from a hardware store) are designed for resistive loads. LEDs with electronic drivers are capacitive loads. They don't play well together. The result is a low-frequency flicker, a hum from the fixture, or lights that only turn on at 80% brightness.

I ran a blind test with our installation team in 2023. Same model of a high-end LED spotlights. One group paired with a standard dimmer, the other with a spec-grade LED-compatible dimmer. 83% of the installation crew identified the pair with the standard dimmer as 'annoying' or 'poor quality' without knowing which was which. Scenario C: The Driver Itself (Less Common, But Real)

The assumption: 'A 24v DC driver is a 24v DC driver.'

The reality: Even at the same voltage rating, drivers vary in their ripple current and stability. A cheap driver might output a 24v signal with a 500 mV ripple. A high-quality constant-current driver (like the ones used in most of our spec-grade products) keeps ripple under 100 mV. That ripple translates directly into visible flicker, especially at the low end of a dimming curve.

How to Diagnose Your Situation: A Practical Guide

  1. Is the flicker steady (like a fast strobe) or random?
    Steady flicker usually points to Scenario B (dimmer incompatibility) or Scenario C (driver ripple). Random flicker points to Scenario A (wiring/neutral issue).
  2. Did it start immediately upon installation, or after a few months?
    Immediately? Most likely installation error (wiring or dimmer). After a few months? Possibly a driver failure (Scenario C) or a component degrading due to heat/overload.
  3. Try the 'Cheap Fix' first.
    Swap the lamp or fixture to a non-dimming circuit. If the flicker stops completely, you have your answer (Scenario B). This takes ten minutes and costs nothing but your time.
  4. Check the connections.
    If the flicker is random and you have access to a junction box, tighten every wire nut connection on that circuit. If it goes away, you fixed Scenario A for the cost of a screwdriver.
