A Bega Bollard Light Quote Taught Me the Real Cost of LED Lighting

At 2:47 on a Tuesday afternoon, a quote from a contractor landed in my inbox. Forty-eight bollard lights for a business park pathway in Dubai. The line item read “LED bollard, complete.” The price was 30% lower than the specification. I almost said yes.

I manage procurement for a 200-person facilities company in the UAE. For the past six years, I’ve controlled a lighting budget of roughly $180,000 a year across six sites. I track every order, every invoice, and every failure. That tracking is exactly what stopped me. Because a few months earlier, I’d learned this lesson in miniature with under cabinet lighting in our own break room.

A colleague had picked out a cheap LED strip for the coffee counter. It looked fine for a month. Then it flickered, then one section died, and the electrician charged us more to diagnose it than the strip originally cost. So when the bollard quote arrived, I had déjà vu.

The Cheap Option Wasn’t Cheaper

Why I Created a Substitution Review Checklist

Here’s the part I’m not proud of. We didn’t have a formal approval chain for substitutions at that time. The project manager had already signed off on the “equivalent” submittal before it reached me. That was the third time in 18 months that a substitution was approved without my team’s review. The first two cost us in rework and mismatched fixtures. That’s when I stopped blaming contractors and started building a process.

Now, any substitution has to meet three simple tests. It has to match the specified photometrics, it has to have a serviceable driver, and it has to have a local spare parts channel. If it doesn’t, it’s not equivalent. Period.

Same Logic, Smaller Fixtures

The same framework applies to tube LED replacements and under cabinet lighting. When we were choosing tube LED lamps for a parking garage, the cheapest option had the driver built into the tube. Fail once, change the tube. But the tube itself is often the expensive part, and you need a stock of replacement lamps on site. The slightly more expensive option had the driver external to the lamp—or at least a clear replacement plan—and a lumen maintenance figure at 50,000 hours. The cheap one had neither. That’s not a luxury. It’s maintainability.

And the question I get asked the most is how to choose under cabinet lighting. The answer is the same. Look for a fixture that lists its CRI, flicker performance, and driver type. Check whether the driver is replaceable without removing the entire fixture. Ask about heat management, because LED performance drops when the driver cooks in a sealed aluminum channel. And don’t pick a fixture just because it looks bright in a photo. A bright spot in the middle of a counter is not useful light. You want even output, no glare, and a realistic color rendering.

In our break room, the good under cabinet light we eventually chose cost about 15% more than the failed strip. It has a remote driver, a clear data sheet, and it doesn’t buzz. That’s not magic. That’s what happens when you apply the same due diligence to every LED lighting decision.

Most lighting standards, including EN 12464-1 for indoor workplaces, tell you target illuminance levels. They don’t tell you which fixture will still maintain those levels in year five. That’s why I always ask for LM-79 test data and lumen maintenance values. If a manufacturer can’t provide those, I assume the fixture will not perform as promised.

What I’d Do Differently

Looking back, I should have required three quotes against the written specification from the start. At the time, the contractor’s word felt close enough. It wasn’t. If I could redo that decision, I’d invest in a formal substitution review process before the project started. Given what I knew then, my choice was reasonable. Now I know better.

The bollard order eventually went to Bega. Not because of the logo, but because the spec sheet answered the questions we’d learned to ask. That decision held up. The fixtures looked consistent, the maintenance staff knew where the spare drivers were, and nobody had to explain to the client why a seven-month-old pathway was starting to look patchy.

So if you’re facing a similar choice, ask for the total cost of ownership. Ask where the replacement parts are stocked. Ask what happens when the LED driver fails. And then trust the data sheet, not the discount.
